Refugees

I can understand people
Not wanting foreigners taking
Their jobs.  Those are illegal aliens
Sneaking in with papers they are faking.

What I can't understand, is why
Countries treat refugees from war-torn
Countries with disrespect and no humanity.
Some are old and some are just born.

The countries acting this way
Would not take this treatment themselves.
Refugees are not invaders taking over, they're
On their way elsewhere, away from bombshells.

Did we learn nothing from the Holocaust?
The world was horrified by the treatment of Jews.
Now these refugees are being mistreated
By police, military, and even news crews.

All they want is safety for
Their families, food to eat,
A place to bathe, use facilities--
To start a new life in peace.

When they already are fearful
And driven from their home--
Being treated like prisoners or animals
Cannot be allowed or condoned.

They may be different,
But they're still human beings.
Is it too much to ask for
Some compassion and understanding?

They're trying to escape terrorism
And evil--wouldn't most people want to?
They didn't ask for this to happen--
In the blink of an eye, it could happen to you.
