Valentine's Day

As children in grade school we decorated
Shoe boxes with pretty paper, ribbons and lace.
And placed them on our desks,
With happy expectation on our face.

A slot cut in the top so we could
Receive valentines--and sometimes
Someones Mom would send cookies
Or cupcakes--those were good times.

These days valentines are more
About romance-a card, some candy,
Maybe flowers will do.  Some go all
Out and get them all, how handy.

Some have a romantic dinner
Just for two.
Candle light and wine,
And a fancy main course will do.

Some couples may even
Get engaged on that day.
That's celebrating Valentine's
In a spectacular way.

If you don't have someone
Special, that's all right too.
You need to love yourself,
Warts and all, before you do.

Be comfortable in your own skin--
Don't try to be someone you're not.
If a person doesn't like the unique
Original you--they're missing a lot.

Be your own Valentine, do little things
For others--cards to a nursing home,
Or to our troops in harms way--So
They know they're not forgotten or alone.

Valentine's Day is to celebrate love.
It doesn't have to be romantic.
Show love to family and friends, there
Are many types of love, it's all in the semantics.
