My Migraines

Hundreds of construction workers
Using hammers in my head.
Nausea and vertigo means
I take to my bed.

Sunlight and fluorescent light,
Aromas smell stronger,
Sounds are extra loud--
Can't take it much longer.

I want to remove my head
And put it on a shelf,
Until the migraine is gone--
And I can feel like myself.

For those who've never
Had one, count yourself lucky.
People who don't know migraines
Say take a pill and all will be ducky.

The prescriptions that help us
Are priced way out of range.
And some can even make
Your heart act strange.

There are normal bad headaches
Causing bad pain--no doubt.
The difference in symptoms and pain level
Is what I'm talking about.

No one asks for these, they're
Hereditary--sometimes from both sides.
Some know their triggers,
Some don't, and wait for the pain to subside.

If you ever get a migraine,
You'll know it right away.
It can last for hours--
Or it can last for days.

When a person cancels
Plans because they have a migraine--
They're not lying or avoiding you,
They're just in too much pain.
