Our Veterans

Nobody likes war--Unless
They're totally insane.
But we have to separate the war
From our troops who get killed and maimed.

Our troops get called to duty
By draft card or enemy attack--
In Viet Nam or Cambodia,
Afghanistan or Iraq.

They deserve our respect--
No matter what you feel about the war,
Because even if you're against it:
We're what they're fighting for.

Most war veterans
Don't talk much about their service,
Unless they're with old buddies
Who were there and just as nervous.

World War I or II, or Korea,
Viet Nam, Gulf War or Desert Storm--
They saw horrors they can't forget:
But they were all proud to wear the uniform.

We treated Viet Nam vets badly,
Because we didn't like that war.
We can only ask their forgiveness
For the name calling and being spit on they endured.

When they come home,
We need to greet them---
And thank them for their service.
For each one is a prize gem.

Make sure they get the help
They need to adjust to civilian life.
For some that means replacing limbs,
And therapy so they can sleep at night.

No matter what branch they served in,
Or what faraway locale--
These are true heroes,
They're code of honor they upheld.
