Snapshots Of Our Mind

They say when you're
In danger--your life
Flashes before your eyes.
The good, the bad, the strife.

Like snapshots in a camera,
Pictures taken by your mind--
You don't have to be in danger,
You can review them anytime.

Pictures of the good times--
Weddings, holidays, outings with family,
Births, and along with the good,
Also come pictures that aren't happy.

They may be of losing a loved one,
A family torn apart--
Things you wished you hadn't said
Or wished you had with all your heart.

The pictures don't come in any order--
Just popping up here and there.
Anything can trigger one--
A song, food, a scent lingering in the air.

They're also called memories--
These pictures in your mind.
They can cheer you and upset you,
Or find peace when it's hard to find.

Little odds and ends
You never really thought of--
How a person turned their head,
Or wouldn't take any guff.

Some pictures get blurry
As our minds get older--
They're not on DVD,
The heart is now their holder.
