Walking to the store or school
And not being afraid,
Or building a stand
And selling lemonade.
You could trick or treat
On different blocks--
And not fear being poisoned,
And going to spook houses and getting your socks scared off.
Playing football with kids
From the neighborhood--
Swing a Statue, and Mother May I?
Dodgeball wasn't misunderstood.
Playing Crack the Whip and Red Rover
At recess unless it rained--
Then we pushed the desks back,
Did the Virginia Reel--memories gained.
A certain day each week
A trailer would come by,
We'd sing hymns and learn about Jesus,
And no parents made outraged cries.
We felt safe to go where we wanted
After letting our folks know--
And built forts and had snowball fights
Whenever it snowed.
We'd stay outside
Until just after dark--
During the day we'd walk to
And play at the park.
We'd have water fights--
TP houses in secret,
We lived and had fun
With no terrible regrets.
It's sad the children now
Can't have the childhood we had--
We had love and parental guidance,
Things children today don't understand.
Some parents are too busy.
And try to be friends--not parents,
That doesn't teach the important things--
Spend time with your family and be a blessing.
