I never really thought about it
Until recently--
When I'm gone,
What will my legacy be?
I'm not a celebrity,
I've never done anything to make the news.
I'm not a wealthy philanthropist--
Sharing my wealth the way I choose.
I've never started a foundation--
Or helped 3rd world countries,
I've cared for family members
Through terrible disease.
I try to help people
Whenever I can,
Because we're all a part
Of the Brotherhood of Man.
I pray for friends and others
Going through hard times,
I've been in their shoes before--
I'ts a ladder we all have to climb.
I hope they know
I loved God---
And tried to be a good Christian,
Giving him all credit and laud.
I hope they remember me
As being kind to everyone,
Stubborn too, I cannot lie--
And tried to leave nothing undone.
How many have thought
What will my legacy be?
How will friends and family
Think and remember me?
You don't have to be maudlin,
Just do what makes your soul sing--
Follow the Golden Rule, what you can do can be big or small,
Just so it's worth remembering.
