Family Cooking

Learning to cook at our house
Became a fun tradition--
Everything Grandma taught Mom,
Mom taught us in our kitchen.

My brother learned too-
It wasn't just "woman's work",
He was a little over 6' tall,
No one would call him a jerk.

He'd read science fiction books
While stirring sauces and soups.
They'd turn out fine--
No sticky, globby goops.

Mom showed us how to make
Homemade noodles and bierocks,
Bread, candy and main courses--
Per all the cousins, Aunt Marilyn's food rocks.

She'd make a big batch
Of Chocolate Chip cookies for me,
To share with my class
For my grade school birthdays.

When Grandma visited,
She and I would bake
Little cakes in my Susie Homemaker oven,
And they would turn out great.

We have cookbooks everywhere--
We try old and new recipes,
We'd set up an assembly line
And make kolaches.

People call and ask us for our recipes--
They liked them so much,
We collect them from everywhere,
Amish, German, Czech, and possibly Dutch.

Family cooking is a wonderful way
To bring families together for  a while,
You make good food along with good memories
That always make you smile.
