Dad got off work at 4:30--
Mom had kids and suitcases ready to go,
We'd drive in the dark through towns,
With their Christmas lights aglow.
We'd get there late--it's a 6 hour drive,
Grandma was at the door to greet us--
Glad we'd arrived safely
With no fuss or muss.
Her love for us shining
For everyone to see,
We wouldn't open our presents
Until Christmas Eve.
Morning Christmas Day at breakfast,
We'd have stockings on our chairs--
Filled with fruit and stocking stuffers,
Like my transistor radio I've cherished for years.
At lunch, aunts, uncles and cousins
From the area came to celebrate--
Each bringing some favorite food,
And we always ate and ate.
We didn't know it then--
But wonderful memories were made,
The kind that stay with you,
And never ever fade.
Grandma was always sad
When we had to leave--
And sent home care packages
Along with the gifts we had received.
My Grandma is in Heaven now,
Spending Christmas with God--
She's my Guardian Angel,
As through this life I trod.
