Thanksgivings Past

Dad had 5 kids in his family,
So we'd alternate holidays.
When I was old enough, I even
Had Thanksgiving at my place.

Everyone brought food,
Though Aunt Marilyn's cooking was legend--
After dinner you couldn't touch your toes,
Let alone bend.

While the adults would visit,
We cousins would play--
Outside if it was warm enough,
Too cold, inside we'd stay.

We'd set up Mom's good table,
And put in the extra leaves--pads so no scratches were made,
Her china, crystal and silver,
Only her best table service was laid.

My specialty was the sweet potatoes,
I'd make them every year.
Though I'm not as good as Mom--
My cooking ability is near.

Most everyone is gone now--
Few big family dinners anymore,
But we can be thankful to have
Memories galore.
