THOUGHTS OF STRAYS ON THE STREETS

We are a band of brothers and sisters,
(this includes cats) that were tossed like
Trash in ditches or on the sides of roads.
We're sad, scared, and we wonder why.

We were parts of families with loving
Homes and humans we loved.  Some of
Us though, were abused and neglected.
Some have a different definition of love.

We all met on the streets and decided there
Is safety in numbers.  If we find food, we
All share it.  If one is sick or injured, they're
Not left behind alone.  If one passes, we grieve.

Some humans walk by us with looks of disgust.
Kids throw rocks at us.  Some think it's
Fun to use us as target practice.  We're out
Here in all kinds of weather--no water, no blankets.

We huddle together for warmth in winter and try
To find shelter to get out of the snow and
The rain and sun.  Some of our humans moved away
And didn't want to take us along--so we are in this band.

Some of us were owned by breeders or dog fight
Promoters.  Once we were no use to them, they
Just tossed us in the trash and moved on.  Some said
We were too old and health issues too expensive to pay.

We wonder, do humans do that to old and sick
Members of their families?  That's so sad.
Some in our group are about to give birth--their
Humans didn't want puppies, many have passed.

Sometimes though, Angels from Animal Rescue Shelters
Find us and take us in.  We get food, baths, and medicine,
And if we are injured, they heal us making sure we're okay
For adoption to someone that needs a forever friend.

There are still more of us out here, left to
Die everyday.  For those still out there,
We who were rescued continue to pray.
All we need is love and someone to care.
