DOMESTIC ABUSE & VIOLENCE

By now, everyone knows about domestic abuse
And violence.  If not, you live under a rock.
Everyone says no one they know is capable--
That's why it's always such a shock.

There seems to be more cases every year.
How do we get them to stop?  We need
To close little loopholes that let these criminals
Out on technicalities they pay no heed.

There are different forms of abuse--but
Each leaves wounds and scars unhealed.
Verbal and emotional abuse leave victims
With no self-esteem and self hatred.

Doesn't matter if it happens at school,
Or at home--it's all cruel and unneeded.
It can lead to emotional problems--
Even suicide if untreated.

Physical abuse is frightening.
Someone says they love you--then
Beats you to a pulp.  Using physical
Violence on a partner or child is a sin.

It's hard to break away--where
Would you go?  How would you live?
They'll find you wherever you go.  Never
Go back--you won't have any life to live.

Look for help, shelters, church programs,
Red Cross, Salvation Army, check any
And all programs.  And file legal paperwork
So the police have a file to show a judge and jury.

Don't think you can change an abuser--
They may act all sweet and kind,
But after a little while--some little
Thing sets them off all over again.
