TOO FAST

I've heard many people say lately
That time is passing much too fast.
They miss the life they had
In times long past.

The death of Mrs. Reagan has
Brought memories of people
And places and events that were
Felt to be complicated, and yet--simple.

Times when you were friends
With your allies, not spying
On them.  And worked with other leaders
To tear down walls and have a country unifying.

A time when you didn't always
Have to work 18-20 hour days
Just to provide for your family--to
Find your job eliminated or yourself replaced.

You didn't always have to risk your
Sanity, health, or bankruptcy
Just to exist.  You could relax with
Your family and take in nature's beauty.

A time when there weren't mass
Shootings practically every month.
A time when we heard "God Bless America",
And our leaders prayed for guidance.

There used to be time for
The little things--showing kindness
And earning trust.  Some have forgotten
These and have made things a mess.

Yes, we've made progress in
Medicine and technology--
But people can't afford either,
Because corporations get greedy.

Time passing so quickly has
Shown some people's true selves.
Lying and ripping off people's savings--
Trying to avoid prison cells.

We can't change the way time passes,
We can only change ourselves.
We must strive to do better, for everyone's
Good--not just what sells.
