Brick Walls

At some point in everyone's life
They run into a brick wall.
Not real ones--unless you're accident prone,
But figuratively--causing your progress to stall.

Some hit walls created by
Circumstances beyond their control.
Some are at school or work,
Blocking the road to their ultimate goal.

Maybe you want to get close
To someone you like, but they've
Erected walls to protect themselves
From pain to their hearts, trying to be brave.

Or are you the one who has
Erected the walls--so no one
Can get in, you've been hurt before
And don't want to be hurt again?

Sometimes, if we're lucky--
We can break through the walls.
You'll find the effort worth it,
As the last bricks fall.

The walls built around someone
Take more patience, time, and skill.
If you make it through--stay trustworthy
So the walls won't be rebuilt.
