The Farmer

Their day starts before sunrise,
No matter what the season.
Busy all day until after sunset,
It's in their blood, passed to each generation.

Their livelihood depends on
Things, especially the weather.
Too much rain or heat and drought,
Or a freeze can definitely test their tether.

They have to be sure their
Crops are fertilized and insured.
And decide what to plant or to leave
The field fallow.  Problems to be endured.

They're a major part of the
Backbone of our country--
Feeding us and also the world.
Sharing food has no boundaries.

Some can't always make ends meet,
So they may take an extra job
To help with finances high.
They're hard working and believe in God.

They're not simple minded hicks
As they're sometimes portrayed--
They're experts in agriculture, loving
The land where they were born and raised.

You might thank a farmer,
For all the work he does.
It takes special people to farm,
To raise crops in the prairie dust.
