Being A Caregiver

Being a caregiver to an elderly
Person has it's ups and downs.
Their health problems make them
Depressed, and wear a frown.

There are times when you both
Feel you're at your wits end.
You take a breath, say a prayer,
And start all over again.

You have to make sure they follow Dr's
Orders and not do something unsafe.
At the same time, you need to give
Each other a little space.

Take them to the Dr. even when
They think they're fine.
That way you head off problems--
Or catch them just in time.

You need endless patience,
Or a way to refill your supply--
Getting frustrated and upset
Only makes them cry.

Do something they want to do,
As long as the Dr. says okay.
Little things to make them smile,
And chase their blues away.

I helped my Mom with my Grandma
Through Alzheimer's till she passed.
And with my Dad until he died.
Now I care for Mom--all stressful tasks.

But they are my family,
It's a debt I'm glad to repay.
They supported me when I was young,
It's my turn to step up today.

Even though we may have spats
Because I'm still her baby,
I'll care for her until the end--
On that there's no doubts or maybes.

Doing this for family,
Makes you a better person.
You learn empathy and respect
For your elders, and to have more compassion.
