Sometimes it's ironic
How our mind works.
We can't always find
What we're looking for and that irks.
But ask about an event
Or words to a song from our past--
And we know them verbatim,
Leaving others gobsmacked.
You may not have liked
History in school,
But you can absorb things
Without realizing--that's cool.
We may not be able
To recite Shakespeare,
But songs from the Beatles, Neil Diamond,
John Denver, Barry Manilow--we can still share.
We can't find our glasses,
Or house or car keys--
But we know every line of "Sweet Caroline"
Or even "Mandy".
"Good Vibrations" was like our theme,
And we absolutely loved whatever Elvis sang.
But ask us something we ignored--
We hit the wall with a bang.
Trivia can be interesting,
Learning little tidbits.
But helping with homework
Can send us into fits.
If it doesn't interest you,
Or you're under too much pressure--
Your mind can go blank and the
Answer may be lost forever.
But if it's connected to something
You like, and there is no major
Stress or pressure involved,
You know it by heart--what could be stranger?
