We'll Never Understand

We'll never understand how an
Alzheimer's or terminal disease
Patient feels.  You can see them
Deteriorate until they're finally at peace.

You know how YOU feel, and
How your heart breaks.
But they either don't know--
Or try and hang on for our sakes.

Some people don't care and
Let them die all alone.
That is something that I
In good conscience can't condone.

Why go visit they say
When it upsets you so?
They don't remember you--
But they're still family I know.

Terminal patients want to
See their loved ones for one
Last visit and loving goodbye.  Making sure
Things are settled before their life is done.

Sick people don't want to be smothered
With cards or cliches--
They want to know they're loved, if
You can't do that--stay away.

Even when they don't know you,
Or are yelling at you to leave--
When the rage has passed, look in their eyes.
Their love and soul are there to see.
