Homecomings

When you've been gone
From home for a long time,
Whatever the reason--
Get past the hurdles you may need to climb.

The person that left may
Have gone to college, or run away
Because of a fight and felt
They couldn't stay.

Or started their own family
In another city and state--
With a new job
And a fresh clean slate.

They may have been in the hospital,
And recently been released.
Or even in jail because their
Third strike was reached.

Lately, the main reason for leaving home
Has been going to war.
To protect our country
And loved ones we adore.

Whatever the reason,
The best part of all--
Are the homecomings,
Winter, Summer, Spring, or Fall.

Whether they get a big parade
Or a family gathering at the folks,
Showing them they're appreciated
Makes them feel strong and sturdy--like giant oaks.

Unexpected homecomings,
Due to estrangement or tour of duty--
Are special for all because
Behind the tears, the love is the true beauty.

The very best homecoming
Anyone can have or hope for--
Is the Second Coming when
God brings us through Heaven's door.
