Generations Of Traditions

Everyone has traditions,
Passed down through their family.
There are the usual Christmas and Thanksgiving,
Or a family birthday party.

Recipes passed from mother to daughter,
Sometimes even mother to son--
Never say to your wife "Mom's was better",
Stick a fork in yourself--you're done.

Kids can be taught to sew, knit or crochet,
How to make and fix things,
Or a favorite sports pastime
Your family likes to play.

It used to be more gender oriented--
Moms and daughters did girly things--
While fathers and sons had workshops,
Took care of the car, and checked for any dings.

When you have your first family dinner--
You'll be petrified,
But generations will have taught you well,
And you'll feel a sense of pride.

You may do something--
And someone asks "why do it that way?"
You can answer "that's how my family does it",
Even if it's farm work like cutting hay.

Each generation can add their own touch
To any tradition--
You're making memories,
And that is their main mission.

Before you know it, you'll sound like
Your parents, maybe resemble them too.
And you can tell your kids and grandkids
Stories of traditions your family had with you.
