EULOGIES 101

When giving a eulogy for someone at their funeral, you normally talk about the person's life and background. You can tell stories or anecdotes or even reminisce about something funny they did to lighten the somber mood a bit. You can tell about all the accomplishments they made in their lifetime. You can tell about how their family and friends loved them and will miss them.  You can even mention what the person's death meant to you personally. And give condolences to the family.

What you DON'T EVER DO giving a eulogy is talk about yourself and any accomplishments you've made. It's NOT about you.  NEVER complain during the eulogy that the service is taking too long and you need to be elsewhere. DO NOT say to a member of the family you know well that you don't know them but would like to get to know them.

Not only is that disrespectful to the deceased, but it is also disrespectful to their family and friends--and the person giving such a eulogy sounds like a pompous, self-serving jerk.

It doesn't matter how smart you are if you don't use your brain and have common sense.
