Someone came to our school today. Don't know who they were or where they came from.. They were awfully upset about something. We could hear yelling and screaming, glass breaking--and then gunshots. Our teacher quickly locked the door to our room and had us all get to our safety spots like we do in the drills. Except this wasn't a drill. She turned the lights off and told us to be as quiet as possible. Some of us were crying quietly, others were praying, We heard people running down the halls to get away from the shooter. Ohers we heard lay wounded and dying. Why did the shooter pick our school? We've never done anything to them. Are they high on drugs, or mad at the world, did they have a mental breakdown? Or sick as it sounds, did they want to be famous and thought this would be the way to do it? It seemed to take forever before we heard the police sirens. Then there was more shouting and gunshots until they managed to catch the shooter before they killed themselves. Then everything went quiet, and we didn't know what was happening--we were terrified. Then we heard the police going through the halls shouting "all clear, suspect in custody". We came out of our rooms and saw destruction everywhere. The First Responders tried to block our view of the injured and dead as we were escorted out. As soon as everyone was accounted for, we were released to our parents. Some staff and students had to go to the hospital for their wounds Once they had identified those who'd been killed, their families were notified. So much pain and grief. WHY? Several of us have PTSD and have to see therapists. Too many of us school students go through this, way too many. Something needs to be done. Won't someone help us stay safe?
