I stand on a wide, open prairie--
Where you can see for miles.
I can almost visualize the old settlers
And the Indians and their many trials.
The settlers wanted to build homesteads
On land they felt was their own--
But the Indians had been there first,
They loved the land they had always roamed.
While the settlers kept coming, expanding
Their settlements and making progress--
The Indians were driven from their homes,
Their accessibility to food and water, less and less.
Diseases from the settlements also
Infected the Indian tribes.
There was much sickness and
Death on both sides.
The settlers thought them
Savages--the Indians thought
Them invaders. Anger and
Fear caused many battles to be fought.
Some tribes were able to make
Peace with the settlers. Some
Were driven from their land to
Different areas called Reservations.
This was just an early episode of man's
Inhumanity to man. It continues to
This day. We are all simply human, and
Should show the respect each other is due.
