He fought in a war that everyone hated.
He was a pilot and was shot down during
One of his bombing runs. He was badly
Injured and taken prisoner. He was a POW
For 5 1/2 years and endured torture and suffering.
They offered to set him free when they found
His father was one of the military leaders in
The Pacific. He refused because other POW's had
Been there longer than he had and he felt it wasn't his
Right. He lived with scars from that time until the end.
When he was released, he could no longer serve
In the military because of his many injuries.
He was married for 32 years and had seven children.
He loved his family and they loved him.
He also loved his country and served it proudly.
He became a politician who was known to be
A straight shooter with a quick temper that
He controlled. When he ran for President twice,
He would always politely correct people making comments
About his opponents--he wouldn't do that.
He never liked being called a hero--he was
Just doing his job serving his country.
He earned the nickname "Maverick" because he
Would not only get upset with Democrats, but also
Republicans if he thought they were moving too slowly.
You may not have cared for the man or for
His politics--but you have to agree that
He served his country long, well, and proudly.
As Joe Biden said: "If I called at 2 a.m. and said I needed
Help, he'd be there." I'd say that's a friend who would have your back.
